Our Journey: Bringing Hope and Empowerment

In 2008, I was confronted with the harsh reality of human trafficking when I learned about young girls being trafficked. As I dug deeper, I discovered that this was happening in my own countries, Nepal and India. Initially, I felt powerless, wondering what difference I could make in addressing such a global issue. But I was wrong to think that way.

I was deeply inspired by the incredible stories of survivors who had not only overcome their hardships but had become agents of change in their communities. These stories gave me hope, and I realized that there were solutions—solutions that were working. I wanted to be part of this movement for change.

With a dream in my heart, I founded Ashagifts (Asha meaning “hope” in Hindi). My idea was simple but impactful: sell products made by survivors of human trafficking, providing them with income opportunities, a path to reintegration into society, and a platform to raise awareness about the global crisis of sex trafficking of young children and girls.

Ashagifts: Empowering Through Enterprise

Today, Asha gifts has grown and evolved into a force for change. Our mission is to help disadvantaged women, landmine victims, stigmatized individuals, and survivors of human trafficking reclaim their dignity and independence.

We collaborate with social enterprises to create employment opportunities in jewelry-making, fabric design, and crafts production. These initiatives offer more than just jobs—they provide training in valuable skills, fair wages, and a caring community where survivors can thrive.

Our work focuses on providing long-term, intensive support, walking alongside survivors as they journey toward freedom and independence. Restoring self-dignity and injecting hope remain at the heart of everything we do.

Stories of Change: From Victims to Changemakers

One of the most inspiring parts of our journey has been witnessing survivors become changemakers in their own communities. Many now manage shelter programs, run schools, mentor newly rescued girls, and even start their own charities and businesses.

Take, for example, Anjali Tamang, who was trafficked at the age of 11. Today, Anjali is a published author, a human rights activist, and an advocate for education. She founded a school in a region of Nepal plagued by child trafficking, the very region where she was once a victim.

Last year, I had the privilege of being part of a hostel building project to provide residential care for girls at high risk of trafficking. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we completed the project, which now provides employment for survivors and counseling services for families. The project also focuses on transforming community mindsets about trafficking, creating a ripple effect of change.
